The entire Aletsch plateau with the villages of Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp is car-free. This is particularly ideal for those looking for peace and quiet and families with children. The atmosphere is unique. On the balcony of Chalet Chumma you don't hear much more than the rustling of the wind, a meltwater stream in spring and the alpine choughs that fly from further up in the mountains to Riederalp in winter. The view of the Rhone Valley or the mountain range of the southern Alps to the Matterhorn and other four-thousand-meter peaks in Lower Valais is breathtaking.

At the same time, this requires a little more planning, because you can't just drive up to the chalet. However, the entire infrastructure in the Aletsch Arena is designed to make it very pleasant for visitors to stay without a car.

So if you arrive by car, just leave it in the car park in Mörel next to the valley station (24 hours cost CHF 10 or CHF 12, depending on the season). If you have a lot of luggage, you can borrow a luggage trolley there (in the parking lot) and take it with you on the mountain railway. The luggage trolley costs CHF 10. A single ticket to Riederalp costs CHF 9.80 for adults and CHF 4.90 for children.

When you arrive at the Riederalp-Mitte mountain station, you can either walk or take an electric taxi or, in winter, a snowmobile. You can book this with Andreas Transport: +41 (0) 79 628 60 68

Keep in mind that you are at an altitude of 2,000 m and there is little competition up there, and it is also difficult to maintain a fleet of vehicles at that altitude. The 5-minute drive to Chalet Chumma costs CHF 50.

Alternatively, you can carry your luggage and walk. This takes approx. 10 minutes for the longer route and approx. 5 minutes for a shortcut with stairs (not possible in winter).
